Cab Front (4th) Wall

Elevator Interior Design Pierces the ‘Fourth’ Wall

The fourth wall, in an elevator cab, is defined by the cab door panels, the push button ‘return panel’ and the transom. Currently, national elevator company finish offerings for these components are limited to satin stainless steel and possibly, satin bronze.

Architects, designers and end uses spend tens of thousands of dollars developing unique cab interior finish walls, ceilings and lighting systems, which are statements and extensions of the lobby finish.

The elevator lobby doors open and the public experiences the artistic expression, the craftsmanship, and the high-end details of the interior walls and ceilings. Then, as the elevator doors close, the guest turns around, only to see a standard, utilitarian satin stainless steel, vertical grain, cab front ‘fourth’ wall.

With the average high-end cab price reaching $50k and sometime $75K, it’s our opinion that the architectural community and end user deserves and should demand more.
